People either love Indian food or they hate it. There’s no middle ground. Admittedly, it’s easy to developan aversion, if one’s sole experience is the standard curries served at lunch buffets.

Don’t get me wrong. Like any young, money conscience expat, I too have my go-to-cheap-hole-in-the wall Indian restaurant spot (Maya). Cozy, family owned restaurants have their charms AND their annoyances. Biggest of which, is patrons sitting on top of each other. Greasy curries don’t sit well when they’re served alongside the next table’s witty recounting of the latest noraebong/soju bender.

And sadly, it doesn’t tempt me to linger over chai and look deeply into my date’s eyes. All of which explains why the opening of Ganga, in Suseonggu (across from Suseong Air Park) is heaven-sent. Ganga differentiates itself from its competitors with its upscale presentation and by adding flair to traditional ingredients. The formula has proved very successful and there are currently nine locations throughout Korea. The newest addition to this restaurant empire doesn’t disappoint. From the moment you step inside, you know you are in capable hands. The wait staff is attentive, yet unobtrusive. Hardwood floors, dim lighting, and soothing earth-toned brick walls create a warm, enchanting ambiance. On the walls, beautiful Indian artifacts beg for a second and third look. At the back of the restaurant, there are four rooms for private dining and an outdoor patio for smokers. The three chefs who crafted the menu have over 20 years of experience. Ganga serves up all its food with style and finesse. The portion sizes are large and most mains range from 15,000-18,000. The stars of Ganga: For starters, try the delectable, bite size samosas served with a pale green, coriander chutney. The Tandoori Chicken Salad is colorful and big enough to share. The bold, yogurt marinated chicken sits atop fresh greens, mandarin oranges, cucumber and baby tomatoes. The Aloo Gobi is, by far, the best vegetarian dish on the menu. It showcases enormous stalks of cauliflower and thick cubes of potatoes. There’s a reason that the Chicken Makhni is a crowd pleaser. This dish is incredibly rich, without being too heavy. The thick velvet tomato and yogurt sauce will melt in your mouth. Soft, chewy naan is a perfect companion for sponging up every last bit of the delectable sauce. The knockout dish at Ganga is the Kashmir Naan, and we tried it at the suggestion of the manager. A little leery of naan stuffed with almonds, coconut powder and dried fruit, I was surprised to find it unusual, but delicious. Sweet and savory, it would have made an excellent appetizer on its own. Ganga also has dishes for those who prefer not to open up their sinuses while dining out. The Beef Malai Pasanda is a mild curry dish fragrant with tumeric, cashews and saffron. You’ll want to nap after this meal, but I suggest you finish off your pomegranate lassi and head across the street. Either play a game of mini-golf or take a leisurely stroll around Suseong Lake. Both will help you recover from food coma.
